MEDICAL SERVICES FEE

PERTINENT FACTS

Section 54.5081 (a), Education Code, authorizes the University of North Texas to charge a Medical Services Fee in an amount not to exceed $25 for each semester of the regular term. The University has charged at the $25 level since September 1, 1997 and needs to be able to raise the fee in the future if we are to continue to provide adequate medical services to our students.

In order for the University to have the funding to meet student medical needs in the future, an increase in the Medical Service Fee cap is necessary. The University intends to propose legislation that would allow the Board to increase the fee to an amount not to exceed $30 as of the beginning of the Fall 2001 semester. After raising the fee to $30, the Board would not be allowed to increase the amount of the fee by more than 10% from one academic year to the next unless the increase is approved by a student referendum. The total amount that the Medical Service Fee could be increased would be capped at $75 for each semester of the regular term or 12-week summer session and $37.50 for each six-week or shorter term of the summer session.

RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS

The President recommends, with the concurrence of the Chancellor, that the Board of Regents approve the Administration’s request for specific legislation that would raise the cap on the Medical Service Fee to $75.
