STUDENT RECREATIONAL SPORTS FEE
PERTINENT FACTS
On September 20, 2000 the Student Association passed a resolution (attached) to work with the University Administration to establish a Student Recreational Sports facility. The facility is needed because the existing Physical Education building is devoted primarily to instruction for course credit, with little time and space left for intramural, co-recreational, and drop-in sports activities. To address this issue, the Student Association sponsored a student referendum (wording of referendum included in attached resolution) on October 2-4, 2000 to determine if students would support a Recreational Sports Fee of $75 for the purpose of constructing, operation, maintaining, improving and equipping a recreational facility and program. The item passed by a nearly 3 to 1 margin.
In order to charge a Recreational Sports Fee to our students, specific legislation must first be passed by the State Legislature and then approved by the Governor.
RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS
The President recommends, with the concurrence of the Chancellor, that the Board of Regents authorize the Administration to request specific legislation that would grant the University the authority to charge a Student Recreational Sports Fee for the purpose of constructing, operating, maintaining, improving, and equipping a recreational facility and program.
