Acting associate dean named to help lead UNT College of Engineering

In a step forward for the future College of Engineering, Reza Mirshams began serving as the acting associate dean on Oct. 16.

A professor in the Department of Engineering Technology for the past two years, Mirshams came to UNT with research and teaching experience in the area of metallurgy and materials engineering.

After receiving degrees from the University of Birmingham, England, and the University of Tehran, Mirshams went on to teach in the mechanical engineering department at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, La., and later at Louisiana State University, also in Baton Rouge.

Mirshams' main job as acting associate dean is to help with the formation of the College of Engineering until a dean for the college is chosen. He will assist with the transition of three existing departments computer sciences, engineering technology and materials science from the College of Arts and Sciences to the College of Engineering.

"I'm very excited," he says. "It's a new challenge, and many things can be done to make this transition run smoothly."

Warren Burggren, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, says Mirshams will be an asset to the new college.

"He has proven himself to be a fine colleague who brings considerable skills to this important transitional task," Burggren says.
