UNT participating in plan to reduce Dallas Independent School District dropouts

The dropout rate for students in the Dallas Independent School District may diminish in the near future because of UNT's efforts to help combat the problem.

The university recently committed to a DISD Dropout Prevention initiative that aims to eliminate many of the barriers that prevent students from getting a college education.

"UNT is proud to bring its resources to this important effort to motivate DISD students to complete high school and aim for the expanded opportunities higher education can open for them," says Norval Pohl, UNT president. "To reach our goals to get more Texas students into college, we must do everything we can through mentoring, tutoring and outreach programs to lower the high school drop-out rate and prepare students for college and fulfilling lives."

UNT will share resources with the school district along with other initiative partners including the Dallas County Community College District, Paul Quinn College, Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M University at Commerce, Texas Woman's University, the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Texas at Dallas.

A clearinghouse of programs and resources will offer students summer math and science camps, expanded field trips for college preparation, intensified tutoring by college students, increased scholarship opportunities and access to college faculty and staff mentors. For more information, contact Cassandra Berry, UNT associate vice president for equity and diversity and UNT System associate vice chancellor for equity and diversity, at (940) 565-2456.
