UNT System Board of Regents approves sale of bonds to finance new residence hall

During a teleconference Oct. 23, the UNT System Board of Regents approved the sale of bonds to fund construction of a new residence hall. The sale is not to exceed $10 million.

UNT participating in plan to reduce Dallas Independent School District dropouts
The dropout rate for students in the Dallas Independent School District may diminish in the near future because of UNT's efforts to help combat the problem.

Acting associate dean named to help lead UNT College of Engineering

In a step forward for the future College of Engineering, Reza Mirshams began serving as the acting associate dean on Oct. 16.

A professor in the Department of Engineering Technology for the past two years, Mirshams came to UNT with research and teaching experience in the area of metallurgy and materials engineering.

UNT has begun using the pseudonym UNT Dallas Campus to market the UNT System Center at Dallas. The legal name for the center remains unchanged.

Institutional Review Board: Protecting human subjects in research

Because of new national standards, UNT researchers using humans as research subjects must complete an instructional program before submitting their research plans to UNT's Institutional Review Board, which works to ensure safe and respectful conditions for human research subjects.

UNT seeking nominations for annual alumni awards

The selection process for the university's 2003 alumni awards is under way. Award recipients will be recognized at the Alumni Awards Dinner on April 11. Faculty and staff members who want to nominate alumni or friends of the university need to complete a nomination form and return it to the Office of Development by 5 p.m. Dec. 2. Nomination forms were distributed in mid-October.

Pohl addresses Faculty Senate

UNT President Norval Pohl addressed members of the Faculty Senate during the group's regular meeting Oct. 9.

Pohl touched on a variety of topics, including parking on campus, proposed residence halls, the College of Engineering, sponsored research, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's most recent meeting, searches to fill administrative roles, UNT enrollment, use of historically under-utilized businesses (HUBs) as vendors, communications and student initiatives.
