Give a little to the community and get into the holiday spirit

Halloween has come and gone and Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away. Before long, evidence of the approaching holiday season will be visible everywhere you turn.

In UNT's grand tradition of generosity, the Human Resources Department and the University Program Council are calling on UNT faculty and staff to participate in their annual food and toy drives and the Adopt an Angel program.

For about 20 years the Human Resources Department has sponsored a food and toy drive. Collections of food and money donations benefit the Denton Community Food Center, and new, unwrapped toys will help the Silent Santa program make the holidays a happier time for many less fortunate children in the area.

Last year, UNT faculty, staff and students provided more than 18,000 pounds of food and 850 toys. Several departments participated in creative programs to increase contributions, like a "Canstruction Contest," in which contestants constructed miniature structures built entirely out of food products.

Donations for the food and toy drives will be accepted through Dec. 9 in Marquis Hall, Room 150, or at marked collection boxes in several locations across campus.

Those interested in establishing a collection point in their building should contact Kristin McMeen, university training manager, at (940) 565-3997 or by e-mail at kmcmeen@unt.edu.

For 10 years, the University Program Council has co-sponsored an Adopt an Angel tree with the Salvation Army.

The tree will be located on the first level of the University Union beginning Nov. 18. Those wishing to contribute should choose an angel ornament from the tree. The ornaments list the name, age, clothing sizes and gift preferences of children participating in the program. Unwrapped gifts should be returned by Dec. 12. Contact Tamela Spiller, UPC traditions coordinator, at (940) 565-3825 for more information on the Adopt an Angel program.
