Institute of Applied Sciences

The state of Texas, the nation and the world are currently facing serious problems related to environmental resources. A growing population is depleting land, water and energy resources. The UNT Institute of Applied Sciences (IAS), originally known as the Institute of Environmental Studies, was formed in 1970. IAS conducts interdisciplinary, problem-solving research on land and water resources, including research and teaching in archaeology, ecotoxicology, environmental chemistry, ethics, remote sensing and environmental restoration.

With an effective system of grant and contract administration, IAS has successfully conducted studies for many federal and state agencies, national corporations and local industries. It functions primarily as a clearinghouse and coordinating center designed to promote excellence in research and outreach.

The graduate course of study in environmental science is designed to equip graduates with practical skills, with experience working as part of interdisciplinary teams, and with knowledge of the legal and institutional framework related to these resources. Under IAS, students take courses designed to fit their interests and research programs in environmental sciences, geography, environmental philosophy and other academic programs.

Through working relationships within the UNT academic community and others, IAS develops skilled interdisciplinary teams with a commitment needed to solve environmental problems. Currently, IAS is allied with several "core" UNT centers: the Aquatic Toxicology Laboratory, Center for Environmental Philosophy, Reservoir Limnology Laboratory, Center for Environmental Archaeology, Center for Remote Sensing, Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, Environmental Modeling Laboratory, Water Research Field Station, and Experimental Stream Facility.
