Howard Johnson, provost and vice president for academic affairs, has changed the fall final exam schedule after consulting with and receiving approval from the Dean's Council and the Faculty Senate and its executive committee, as well as Student Government Association executives and the associate vice president for enrollment management. The change came in anticipation of the impact that participation in a Sun Belt Conference football bowl game will have on a large number of students, faculty and staff members.
The new final exam schedule applies to all faculty and all classes. (See the table for details.) The changes mean that the regular class day of Dec. 8 becomes a final exam day, as do the review days scheduled for Dec. 9 and 10. Johnson says faculty members may either make up that lost day of instruction with an outside assignment or arrange for additional meeting time before the beginning of finals to compensate for the loss. This year's academic calendar, which runs a week later into December than in recent years, was established before the bowl game schedule was known. The academic calendar is created in conjunction with the North Texas Federation of Universities to facilitate the operation of joint degree programs. Johnson says participating in a bowl game is an important opportunity for UNT because it opens a national window for the entire university and does a great deal to raise the image and reputation of the institution.
