Operation Eagle to assist Florida children

School supply drives traditionally take place in the summer, before local schools open in August. But to help a specific area hard hit by Mother Nature this fall, a committee of UNT students and staff members is coordinating a school supply drive that runs through Dec. 10.

With schools in Florida damaged by September's hurricanes, the committee launched Operation Eagle 2004 to replace lost supplies in schools in Escambia County, located in the extreme northwestern corner of Florida. All of the Escambia County School District's schools and district buildings were damaged when Hurricane Ivan hit the county Sept. 18. About 75 percent of the schools had either moderate or major damage.

Collection locations include the University Union; Student Recreation Center; Hurley Administration Building, Room 207; and Music Building, Room 247. Suggested donations include pens and pencils, paper towels and tissues, pencil sharpeners, educational games, staplers, blank compact disks, batteries, gift cards for teachers to purchase replacement items or monetary donations.
