Almost 100 people attended UNT's first seminar — and the first of its kind in the country — addressing the health care related concerns of lesbian, bisexual and transgender women Nov. 12. Sponsored by the UNT Division of Equity and Diversity, the seminar "Women From Diverse Backgrounds and Cultures Coming Together to Speak Out" was designed to create more welcoming environments with better access to health care services for lesbian, bisexual and transgender women. Specifically, the seminar focused on the needs and issues of women who are lesbian, bisexual or transgender and their allies and how health care and service professionals can address these needs. The seminar was sponsored by a grant from the Dallas Women's Foundation. The keynote speaker and seminar facilitator was Patricia Nell Warren, a representative from The Mautner Project, a national non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to addressing the health care needs of lesbians. Topics covered included social and professional services, legal issues, health and cultural competency, and ways to remove barriers. About 100 people also attended a pre-seminar event on Nov. 11 that featured poetry by Natasha Carrizosa and a one-woman show and personal story by Ingrid Rivera titled "Lagrimas de Cocodrilo/Crocodile Tears."
