TAMS students semifinalists in national competition

Five Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science students were named semifinalists in the 2004 Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology.

Jemma Alarcon, Ian Haken, Brian Huskinson, Erica Rew and Zach Zhang were among 45 Texas students recognized in the competition, which was established in 1999 and is funded by the Siemens Foundation. The competition recognizes high school research in mathematics and science. Students may submit individual projects or projects conducted with one or two other students.

Alarcon, Haken, Huskinson and Zhang all worked in the laboratories of UNT faculty members this summer for their research projects, with Alarcon conducting research with Pamela Padilla, assistant professor of biological sciences, and Haken working with Angela Wilson, assistant professor of chemistry. Huskinson worked in the laboratory of Rebecca Dickstein, associate professor of biological sciences, while Zhang conducted research with Douglas Root, associate professor of biological sciences.

Rew, meanwhile, completed a summer mathematics project while attending Texas State University's Honors Math Camp in San Marcos.
