Holiday giving continues on campus

The spirit
of the holidays has once again arrived on campus. The annual toy and
food drive sponsored by the human resources office continues through
Dec. 11, and the University Program Council is co-sponsoring an Adopt
an Angel tree with the Salvation Army through Dec. 12.
Ornaments on the tree, located on the first level of the University Union, list
the name, age, clothing sizes and gift preferences of children in the Adopt an
Angel program. Participants choose ornaments from the tree, shop for the children
and return the unwrapped gifts by Dec. 12. Call Trevor Shive, UPC traditions
coordinator, at (940) 565-3825 for more information.
In the toy and food drive, items such as canned food, peanut butter, dry cereal,
rice and beans, toothpaste and diapers are being collected for the Denton Community
Food Center, and new, unwrapped toys for children and teen-agers will be donated
to the Silent Santa program.
In last year’s drive, the university collected
1,062 toys and more than 11,500 pounds of food.
Donations may be dropped off at several locations around campus, including Marquis
Hall, Room 150, and by the information desk on the third level of the University
Union. Tax-deductible monetary donations for food are also being accepted. Make
checks out to the Denton Community Food Center.
In conjunction with the drive, the "Can You Build It? Yes, You Can!" food
construction contest is under way, in which teams build structures such as buildings,
landscapes or statues using canned foods, beans, rice, pasta, peanut butter,
jelly, bar soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and baby items. The items used in the
construction may not be glued, stapled, altered or opened or have their labels
removed.
Entries,
which will be judged on creativity, size, number of items used and
realism, should be completed by Dec. 2 for judging Dec. 2-5. Teams
are asked
to record
the number of items used and call the training area of human resources at (940)
565-4246 when the structure is ready to be judged. Pictures of last year’s
winners are online at www.unt.edu/hr/training/canstruction2002.htm.
For more information about the toy and food drive, contact Kristin McMeen,
university training coordinator, at kmcmeen@unt.edu or
