Grant to motivate young Americans into election process participation

The U.S. Election Assistance Commission awarded an $80,000 grant to UNT to implement programs to encourage students at Dallas, Denton and Tarrant county institutions of higher education to assist in the administration of the Nov. 2 elections.

Study to help online retailers keep customers


Despite spending thousands of dollars on advertising, online retailers are losing many customers because of fitting issues. But research by Eun Young Kim, UNT assistant professor of merchandising, shows that shoppers are sometimes willing to overlook fitting problems.

UNT professor warns about the drawbacks of popular low carbohydrate diets


High-protein/low-carbohydrate diets have recently become extremely popular. Restaurants, grocery stores and even vending machines are now catering to the low-carb craze. But according to Juliet Getty, associate professor and nutritionist in the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management, the diet is unbalanced, unhealthy and even potentially dangerous.

Grant to train teachers of American history

UNT military historians will join with the Denton Independent School District to train teachers to teach American history by focusing on battles and tactics, thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

UNT toy and food drive begins Nov. 8

The UNT Human Resources Department will sponsor the annual toy and food drive from Nov. 8 to Dec. 10. Last year, this campuswide event provided 14,849 pounds of food and 1,185 toys for Denton-area families.

American Heart Walk raises $50,000 plus

"This year's American Heart Walk held Oct. 9 in Denton was a huge success," says Rebecca Brooks, corporate market director of the American Heart Association, which sponsored the event. The walk raised more than $50,000, which was twice as much as last year's amount.

Grant to fund Miranda warning study

"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to talk to a lawyer and have a lawyer present with you during questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you if you wish."

With characters on Law and Order and other television shows frequently quoting words like these, many Americans may believe that this version of the Miranda warnings, which warn a person accused of a crime against self-incrimination, is the only version.
