UNT raises almost
$6,000 in heart walk
When the American
Heart Association issued a call for help to UNT for the annual Denton Heart
Walk, the university responded by making this year's walk the association's
largest in Denton.
A record-breaking 300-plus participants turned up Oct. 4 at Denton Regional
Medical Center's Rail of Trails for the annual 5K non-competitive walk.
The event aims to increase awareness of physical activity and a heart-healthy
lifestyle while raising money to fund research for the prevention of heart
disease and stroke.
This year's walkers raised more than $26,400 — nearly $6,000 of
that coming from UNT employees. A UNT team and individual were among the top
fund-raisers.
The UNT Gateway team — which was made up of Annah Chakola and Ellie Williams
of the Office of Development; students Susana Berrun, Jessica Lugo and Antonia
Mendez; and Chancellor Lee Jackson — was recognized for raising $1,325.
Chakola, who raised $770, was recognized as a top individual fund-raiser.
UNT faculty and staff members who served on the organizing committee for the
walk were: Lynn Bissett, University Communications and Marketing; Reginald
Bond, Student Health and Wellness Center; Judy Delay, College of Business Administration;
Anneke Feenstra, Student Recreation Center; Chelita Lewis, University Communications
and Marketing; and Terry Tehan, College of Business Administration.
