Texas Institute for Research and Education on Aging

The Texas Institute for Research and Education on Aging (TIREA) links college and university faculty with service professionals across Texas to improve research, education and programs directly affecting the independence and well-being of senior citizens. TIREA has established numerous programs since its inception in 1991, including intergenerational programs, volunteer activities, educational initiatives and environmental protection services. Some of the institute's major programs include:

  • Senior Volunteers for Childhood Immunization, which partners new mothers with senior citizens to encourage immunizations for preschool children.

  • National Academy for Teaching and Learning About Aging, which promotes the understanding of aging issues through education and intergenerational participation.

  • A team effort between the Greater Dallas Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and TIREA to establish a Denton County office to provide Alzheimer's caregiver classes, support group meetings, care fairs, safe return registrations and Memory Walks for Denton County residents.

  • Texas Consortium for Geriatric Education Centers, which offers programs and resources in the field of aging to help health professionals improve the lives of older Texans.
