UNT radio station receives 'Best of Dallas' award

Calling UNT's student-run radio station one of the "coolest" stations in the Southwest, the staff of the Dallas Observer selected KNTU-FM, 88.1, as Best Public Music Radio Station in its annual "Best of Dallas" issue.

The issue, printed the week of Sept. 20 and available online at www.dallasobserver.com, includes favorites of Observer staff members and readers for the best in culture, food, sports, scenes and shopping in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Green radioThe Observer staff note that KNTU's mix of jazz, classical and world music "can't be beat." The notice also mentions the station's Sunday evening offering, "The Show That Fell to Earth," which showcases alternative and electronic music.

"We're thrilled to be recognized in this way for our programming," says Russ Campbell, KNTU general manager and a lecturer in the radio, television and film department.

Mark Lambert, the station's program/operations director, agrees.

"It's a wonderful treat to know our jazz programming has an appreciative audience," he says.

Launched Oct. 31, 1969, KNTU broadcasts from 6 a.m. to midnight every day of the year and has 50 to 75 student volunteers working in the programming, news and sports departments each semester. In addition, seven students work in paid, mid-management positions.

KNTU moved to new offices and studios in UNT's renovated Radio, TV, Film and Performing Arts Building earlier this year.

The station also airs Tejano music on Saturday mornings and classical music on Sundays. Its news and public affairs programming includes Denton School Board meeting broadcasts, city and county election returns, UNT athletic events and other campus events. On weekdays, KNTU presents a half-hour newscast at 5:30 p.m. produced by broadcast journalism students.
