Center for U.S./Mexico Alliances for Community Renewal

The Center for U.S./Mexico Alliances for Community Renewal, founded in 1995, works to develop and strengthen community-building activities in the United States and Mexico through teaching, research and service opportunities.

By working with Mexican institutions, the center strives to build study abroad opportunities and field schools. Study abroad programs provide opportunities for U.S. students to study at Mexican institutions and for Mexican students to study in the Metroplex. Syl Flores, center director, says the center works to instill a sense of community pride by challenging Mexican students who are studying at UNT to return to their hometowns in Mexico after receiving their degrees to help make a difference.

Field schools allow students to apply theories and skills related to community renewal giving back to build a stronger community and to preserve prosperity in Mexican communities. Each year the center assists in taking more than 125 UNT and area high school students to Mexican field schools to work, live and experience the culture. The center attempts to provide assistance in several areas including water management, entrepreneurship development, community organization, teaching strategies, police techniques and program development for the care of the elderly.
