Center for Sport Psychology and
Performance Excellence

The Center for Sport Psychology and Performance Excellence, approved by the university in 1997, is an interdisciplinary training center. It is supported by the Department of Psychology; the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation; the College of Arts and Sciences; and the College of Education. The center supports and trains psychology and kinesiology graduate students while pursuing its three interlocking missions education and training, research, and service.

Our primary mission is to educate and train future sport psychology professionals through the master's program in kinesiology and the doctoral program in counseling psychology. Students prepare for a variety of careers, including university faculty members, practicing psychologists, athletic coaches and exercise/fitness specialists.

In the area of research, we seek external funding for ongoing projects and graduate student training, provide formal training and research opportunities for graduate students in sport and exercise psychology, and disseminate our research findings through professional and scholarly journals and conference presentations. Current lines of research within the center include athletic injury, eating disorders, peak performance, life skills training, factors influencing athletes' decisions to seek sport psychology services, coping in high-risk sports, and coaching effectiveness.

Our service mission has two purposes: to provide athletes, sport teams and organizations throughout Texas and the United States with sport and exercise psychology services, ranging from personal counseling to performance enhancement; and to provide organized and supervised practice for graduate students in sport and exercise psychology.

Through the center and its associated departments, UNT is at the forefront of U.S. universities in offering interdisciplinary training in applied sport psychology. For more information, call us at (940) 369-SPORT or visit our web site at www.sportpsych.unt.edu.
