SECC: Making a better Texas for all Texans

Throughout the month of October, the State Employee Charitable Campaign provides us the faculty and staff at UNT with an opportunity to financially support a charitable cause of our choice. Rather than being bombarded with solicitations from individual charities throughout the year, SECC provides an umbrella of almost 350 qualifying organizations eligible to receive support. This cost-effective approach to fund raising means that we as donors choose what causes to support and that these organizations have an equal opportunity to be considered for that support.

Last year, UNT faculty and staff contributed $92,403, greatly exceeding the goal of $72,000. This year, the SECC Steering Committee has set a goal of $100,000. All retirement-eligible employees should have received an SECC pledge/gift form and a brochure listing the organizations eligible to receive support. In front of each listing on the brochure is a six-digit code needed to identify the charity or federation on the pledge form. The percentage following each entry represents the portion of income used by that charity for fund-raising and administrative costs. More information on the SECC-eligible charities is available on the UNT web page at web2.unt.edu/secc/index.cfm or by calling the SECC hotline at 369-7322.

Completed pledge/gift forms should be returned to your unit's SECC coordinator or directly to Jean Bush, Administration Building, Room 102.

Several new features have been added to the UNT campaign this year. Each week, departments with 50, 75 and 100 percent of their employees participating in the campaign will be recognized with a sign displayed on their main door. Also, please mark the following events on your calendar:

  • Oct. 25-26, silent auction of holiday crafts, sponsored by Registrar's Office
  • Oct. 27, SECC Golf Tournament (call Sue Delmark at 565-2275 for additional information)

We will send out weekly e-mail updates on the campaign's progress this month and will announce additional awards for departments and units achieving exemplary participation rates.

Two points of clarification. First, the SECC is a separate campaign from that of the United Way. While the United Way is one of the eligible charitable federations to receive designated contributions, the SECC includes a much broader range of charities. In addition, the United Way administers the SECC on behalf of the state of Texas (prints brochures and forms, allocates funds per the donor's instructions), but this is a contractual service separate from the fund-raising initiative. Second, the identity of UNT donors remains strictly confidential. No list of donors is compiled. Information is aggregated only at a departmental or unit level to track participation rates in order to recognize those units achieving exemplary levels of participation.

We hope you choose to participate in the SECC initiative. While as part of this campaign we enjoy light-hearted competition within the UNT family, please know that the charities supported by your gifts are dedicated to making Texas a better place to live for all Texans. Thank you, UNT.

Bob Bland (bbland@scs.cmm.unt.edu), professor and chair of the Department of Public Administration, and Jean Bush (bush@fis.admin.unt.edu), budget director, are co-chairs of this year's campaign.
