Building spirit on campus

Homecoming is one of the few times each year when the entire campus community, including faculty, staff, students, former students and friends of the university come together.

"No matter what tie a person has to the university, it is important to participate in spirit activities, especially Homecoming," says Mark Packer, University Union program coordinator and special projects Homecoming representative.

Although the game is the main event, faculty, staff and students begin building Homecoming spirit the week before. This year, an extra effort was made to promote spirit, according to Pat Sloan, director of special events.

Beginning Oct. 9, the McConnell Tower at the Administration Building glowed green each night. Departments were invited to decorate their buildings and offices and fly green flags, and faculty, staff and students were encouraged to wear green or UNT attire each day especially Friday. Student organizations handed out stickers and green ribbons for people to wear.

Members of the campus community also had a chance to decorate their cars with antenna balls and window flags, distributed by students throughout the week to promote spirit for the Mean Green.

On Friday, the day before Homecoming, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new Shrader Pavilion, followed by a short pep rally and a presentation by Last Chance Forever, a rehabilitation and release program for eagles.

Game day excitement started with a parade beginning at Avenue E and Prairie streets at 11 a.m. and ending at the Denton square.

A pre-game barbecue featured Spring Creek Barbeque at the UNT practice fields. Proceeds from meals go to a scholarship for students from the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management.

The Mean Green Village also featured Grammy award-winning polka band Brave Combo and tents for campus departments, alumni and student organizations.

The Mean Green Village and barbecue wrapped up in time for the pre-game activities at Fouts Field and the kickoff of the UNT vs. Utah State game.
