Governor appoints Robert A. Nickell to UNT Board of Regents
Texas Gov. George W. Bush has appointed Robert A. Nickell of Irving to the UNT Board of Regents.
The new regent will serve a term ending May 22, 2003. He fills the unexpired term of Martha Fuller Turner of Houston, who resigned. The Texas Senate must confirm the appointment.
Nickell assumed his new responsibilities immediately and participated in the Oct. 10 regents meeting.
An alumnus of UNT with a bachelor's degree in business administration and an M.B.A., Nickell is an independent investor with a background as a commercial airline pilot and a history of outstanding entrepreneurial success in wholesale distribution.
"All of us in the UNT System are delighted that the governor has chosen an individual of Bob Nickell's talent and experience to be a regent," says Chancellor Alfred F. Hurley.
After qualifying for his pilot's license at an early age, Nickell worked as a flight instructor while studying for his bachelor's degree. He became one of Braniff Airways' youngest pilots one week after graduating in 1968.
Between stints of commercial flying, Nickell became interested in a small Dallas company (Tucker Rocky Distributing, formerly Ed Tucker Distributor Inc.) that distributed motorcycle, watercraft and snowmobile parts. As president, CEO and chair, he turned the company into the biggest wholesale distribution business of its kind in the world.
He returned to UNT to earn his M.B.A. in 1982.
In addition to serving as chair of the board of trustees of the Professional Development Institute at UNT, Nickell is a member of the UNT College of Business Administration Advisory Board.
"I am very excited about this opportunity to raise the level of my service to UNT to an active role on the Board of Regents. I'm looking forward to making positive contributions to the advancement of the university and the new UNT System," Nickell says.
