Houston student wins Stanley Scholarship from TAMS

Bach Bui of Houston received this year's Julian C. Stanley Scholarship given by the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science.

Bui began his first year at the academy this fall. He previously attended Memorial High School.

The Julian C. Stanley Scholarship recognizes a new TAMS student who shows outstanding aptitude for a career in mathematics. The scholarship provides $500 toward the student's room and board fees.

An internationally known educator, Stanley is the founder and director of the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth at Johns Hopkins University. He served on the TAMS advisory board for 11 years before his retirement last year.

Bui is taking Multivariable Calculus, a sophomore-level course usually open only to second-year TAMS students. He calls winning the Stanley scholarship "a great honor."

"To be singled out is great," he says. "And maybe the scholarship will make me think more about entering math as a career."

Bui will graduate from TAMS in May 2002.
