Growth trend continues at UNT Dallas Campus

The University of North  Texas at Dallas is closer than ever to becoming a reality. The first building for the new campus is scheduled to open in 2007 on 264 acres of land bordered on the north by Camp Wisdom Road and on the west by Houston School Road. Construction is set to begin in 2005, according to John Price, vice provost of the UNT Dallas Campus.

Sasaki Associates of Boston and San Francisco, the architectural firm selected to design the first building, met with citizens and business leaders in both Dallas and Ellis counties to get feedback on the firm's initial designs.

The UNT Dallas Campus is experiencing steady growth, Price says, with an on-site enrollment of 1,197 students — or 423 full-time equivalent (FTE) students — this fall. That's a 10.8-percent increase over the on-site enrollment last year, which was 1,080.

When enrollment reaches 1,000 full-time equivalent students, the UNT System can begin securing approvals to operate UNT at Dallas as a full-fledged university. In May 2003 the Texas Legislature passed bills making previously authorized funds available for the first UNT at Dallas building.

The UNT System is currently developing a conceptual framework that will become the basis of the academic plan for UNT at Dallas. Price says that an essential part of the academic plan is taking the steps to secure approvals and accreditation to offer courses as an independent university and grant degrees through UNT at Dallas.
