UNT Board
of Regents awards construction contract for Eagle Point projects
In
a Sept. 19 teleconference, UNT System regents awarded the construction
manager-at-risk contract for current projects on the Eagle Point Campus
to Austin Commercial. A construction manager at risk is the contractor
selected as the best qualified to guarantee a maximum price for construction
work on the project. Current Eagle Point Campus projects are Victory Hall,
a 600-bed residence hall; a dining hall; and the shell structure of an
athletic center.

Professor to serve as guest researcher at CDC
James
Morrow, Regents Professor of kinesiology, health promotion and recreation,
is serving for nine months as a guest researcher studying obesity in youth
for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center
for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

faculty, staff encouraged to contribute nominations for annual alumni
awards
The selection
process for UNT's 2004 alumni awards is under way. Award recipients
will be recognized at the Alumni Awards Dinner on April 16 at the Gateway
Center. Faculty and staff members who want to nominate alumni or friends
of the university need to complete a nomination form and return it to
the Office of Development, Gateway Center, Room 201C by Oct. 10.

campaign puts focus on caring
The
State Employee Charitable Campaign is a workplace campaign providing state
employees with a simple way to make voluntary, tax-deductible contributions
to more than 400 different charitable organizations. Employees may join
the campaign by donating as little as $2 per month in the form of a payroll
deduction.

NAFTA
pumps dollars into Texas economy, but at border cities' expense

In
the nearly 10 years since the North American Free Trade Agreement became
effective in Canada, Mexico and the United States, retail sales decreased
often drastically
in many of Texas'
border cities with Mexico, according to David Molina, director of UNT's
Center for Inter-American Studies and an associate professor of economics.
However, NAFTA has also pumped $126 billion in constant dollars
money that doesn't account for inflation as a cause of more dollars
into the Texas
economy during the last three years, he adds.
