Campus Catalog settles into new location

If you can't find the J.C. Penney Campus Catalog, just look around the corner from its old location on the third floor of the University Union Campus Catalog is now in the former location of Wells Fargo Bank, which now occupies the space that once housed Campus Catalog.

Campus Catalog, a collaboration between J.C. Penney Co. Inc. and the UNT School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management, is a laboratory for merchandising students.

Beginning today, Oct. 4, Campus Catalog is giving away copies of the J.C. Penney Christmas Catalog to the first 25 people who stop by to welcome members of the UNT community to the new location.

Students practice the skills they've learned in the classroom by handling the day-to-day operations of the for-profit business, including advertising, promotions and sales. UNT students, faculty and staff serve as the customer base, and all profits go toward maintaining the Campus Catalog learning lab and funding scholarships.

J.C. Penney Catalog merchandise orders can be placed in three ways: at Campus Catalog, online at www.jcpenney.com or by phone at (800) 222-6161. When ordering, customers should ask that their purchases be delivered to the UNT Campus Catalog (store No. 8590-2). When an order is shipped to Campus Catalog, the delivery is secure until the customer picks it up, saving shipping charges and helping UNT students.

"Your dollars count," says Dee Knight, faculty adviser for Campus Catalog and assistant professor of merchandising. "The student business earns a commission on J.C. Penney catalog merchandise delivered to Campus Catalog. On all future orders, the commission is earned regardless of whether the customers pick up their purchases at the Campus Catalog or have them delivered to their home."

The curriculum associated with Campus Catalog also is being expanded. The School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management now offers a bachelor's degree with a major in electronic merchandising. Along with management, merchandising and promotion experience, students will learn how to merchandise via a web site created for the UNT community.

The student business will continue to alert faculty and staff through GroupWise of sales and special promotions. Campus Catalog is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
