Center for International Economic Studies and Research The Center for International Economic Studies and Research, established in 1990, studies the economic impact that NAFTA and other international agreements have had on Texas and the United States. David Molina, co-director of the center and associate professor of economics, has testified in congressional briefings and also helped to foster relations between manufacturing facilities in Mexican and Canadian border towns and industries in the United States. By consulting with industries and corporations to help them reduce pollution, Molina has worked to improve environmental conditions and make businesses on both sides of the borders more profitable. In 1996, Michael McPherson, associate professor of economics, joined the center as co-director and began to develop a professional improvement program between UNT and African nations. His efforts have created business opportunities for Africans and also created a pipeline for resource and commodity trading that is beneficial to both the United States and African countries. As barriers continue to break down and trade between nations grows, the center can expand. Molina says that recently passed federal legislation is likely to result in a free trade agreement with Chile, allowing the center to broaden its research.
