The Texas Center for Educational Technology was legislatively established in 1988. Since that time, TCET has grown steadily to become nationally recognized in research and development in the area of educational technology. The center focuses on the effective integration of technology into today's classroom. The annual operating budget for TCET, now exceeding $3 million, comes from a variety of sources, including the U.S. Department of Education, the Texas Education Agency and several private foundations. The Texas Education Agency has recognized TCET as the state's "Center for Educator Development in Technology Applications." TCET's support from Intel Corp., the Gates Foundation and the Texas Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund provides development opportunities to 20,000 Texas teachers. In this program, each participant completes 40 contact hours in technology training. There are
20 full-time staff members now working for TCET. Jim Poirot from the Department
of Technology and Cognition in the College of Education is the TCET director.
