Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will give a public lecture at UNT Oct. 16. The lecture, titled "Global Perspectives of a Secretary of State," is the first in UNT's new Distinguished Lecture Series and begins at 8 p.m. in the Silver Eagle Suite of the University Union. Tickets cost $20 for the general public and $10 for UNT faculty and staff members and senior citizens. UNT students presenting valid student identification cards will receive free tickets. To purchase tickets, call the UNT Union Information Center at (940) 565-3805. Albright became the nation's first female secretary of state in 1997. Under her tenure, NATO successfully intervened to halt ethnic cleansing in Kosovo; a stable peace was reached in the Balkans; the number of democratic nations grew in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America; and the U.S. experienced a growth of trade in Africa through the African Growth Opportunity Act as well as in the Americas. Albright also persuaded Congress to increase funding for U.S. overseas embassies by 17 percent and reverse a decade-long drop in funding. The Distinguished Lecture Series is currently administered by the Fine Arts Series Committee, consisting of three faculty members, three staff members, six students, a student chairman, and two permanent ex-officio members. The Distinguished Lecture Series is not a part of the Fine Arts Series, however. In the near future, the Distinguished Lecture Series will have its own committee with membership similar to that of the Fine Arts Series Committee. Photo by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders.
