UNT student named Mickey Leland fellow

The U.S. Department of Energy recently named UNT student Sylvia Hernandez to the 2000 class of Mickey Leland Energy Fellows.

Hernandez worked 10 weeks for the department as a summer intern. She developed a database of environmental conditions at four Strategic Petroleum Reserves government oil fields after characterizing each area's habitat. She also participated in total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) analysis at each reserve. The department will use the information in case of a major oil or brine spill.

Bill Richardson, U.S. Secretary of Energy, honored Hernandez and the 29 other interns in a ceremony Aug. 8. Although the Department of Energy began the summer internship program in 1995, this was the first year that students were recognized as Mickey Leland Fellows. Mickey Leland, a six-term Democratic congressman from Houston, died in 1989 in a plane crash on his way to an Ethiopian refugee camp.
