Start-up the Band seeking used instruments

Blow the cobwebs out of that old trumpet, trombone or clarinet you've got stored in the attic, closet or garage and contribute it to the College of Music. The college needs instrument donations to continue Start-up the Band, an after-school band program in which fifth-graders learn the basics of music before they begin the formal band program in school.

The program serves students living in Denton's Owsley addition, a concentration of multi-family dwellings on the west side of Denton where about 300 disadvantaged families live. The program is operated in conjunction with Denton's Owsley Youth Center.

Collected instruments will be cleaned and repaired by music education students before they are distributed to the students participating in Start-up the Band, so instruments can be donated in any condition. Any traditional band instrument can be donated and claimed as a charitable donation on tax returns. To donate an instrument to UNT's Start-up the Band program, call (940) 565-4589.
