Shockley, who was especially interested in the literature of the Southwest, served as president of the Poetry Society of Texas, the Texas Folklore Society, the Texas American Studies Association and the Texas Conference of College Teachers of English. He also chaired both the Texas and Southwest conference of the American Association of University Professors and was a member and officer of numerous other organizations. He wrote two widely used textbooks and published poetry, fiction, essays and scholarly articles. Among his most successful students is novelist and UNT alumnus Larry McMurtry. Shockley was involved in various political causes throughout the century, including defending targets of McCarthyism, fighting racism and speaking in opposition to the Vietnam War. He is survived
by his wife of 67 years, Eliza Taylor Shockley of South Carolina; his
daughter, Ellen; and his son, John. A memorial ceremony at Shockley's
cabin near Allenspark, Colo., which he built in 1952, is being planned.
