UNT celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

UNT is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of celebrations and educational events that began Sept. 15.

Hispanic Heritage Month was first celebrated in 1989 and is observed nationally Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. Andrea Robledo, assistant director of the Multicultural Center, says many UNT organizations and individuals have worked together to arrange activities and learning opportunities for students and those from the Denton community. This year's theme is "Beyond the Border."

Events, which are free unless otherwise indicated, include the following:

Sept. 24

Noon-1 p.m., "Health Issues and Young Hispanics."

Speaker J.C. Reynoso, a bilingual public health educator for the city of Irving, will share information concerning health issues and Hispanics. Marquis Hall, Room 118.

Sept. 30

Noon-1 p.m., "Faces of Poverty."

Syl Flores, UNT lecturer in rehabilitation studies, social work and addictions, will discuss his work in Mexico. Location to be announced.

Oct. 1

Noon-1 p.m., "Getting What You Came For."

Consuelo Ballom, program coordinator for UNT's TRIO Center for Student Development, speaks on making the most of your college years. Multicultural Center, University Union, Room 422.

Oct. 8

Noon-2 p.m., La Historia Oficial.

A film in Spanish with English subtitles about a mother who comes to the shocking realization that she has adopted a kidnapped child. Discussion will follow. Location to be announced.

Oct. 9

3:15-4:45 p.m., "Valuing Cultural Diversity."

The UNT Office of Equity and Diversity will present a video and discussion regarding diversity on campus. University Union, Room 418.

Oct. 14

1-2 p.m., La Boda.

A documentary based on the life of a migrant girl and her wedding. This film sheds light on the life of migrant workers and cultural aspects of wedding ceremonies. Multicultural Center, University Union, Room 422.

Oct. 16

6-9 p.m., Celebracion.

An annual banquet honoring the accomplishments of Hispanics and Latinos. Silver Eagle Suite, University Union. Tickets can be purchased in the Multicultural Center. Ticket price is tentatively set at $15.
