David Brockington, purchasing and payment services accounting clerk and former Staff Council historian, was elected council chair. The new vice chair is Mary Finley, University Union assistant director. Becky Hughes, administrative assistant in the Department of Philosophy and Religion Studies, was elected to a second term as secretary and treasurer, and Donald Riley, housing custodial supervisor, was elected historian. Brian Bethea, director of promotions in athletics, was elected parliamentarian. Five other staff members were chosen to sit on the executive committee: Reggie Bond, executive director of the Student Health and Wellness Center, who will represent staff members in the professional work group; Bobbie Lawrence, food service worker in dining services, who will represent staff members in the service work group for a second term; Teresa McCloud, administrative assistant in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, who will represent the office support work group; Rachel Smith, student services coordinator in student employment, who will represent staff members in the paraprofessional, technology and police work group; and Doug Westbrook, automotive mechanic in facilities, who will represent those in the skilled crafts group. In other business, the council: Heard a report from the Committee on Committees regarding new council members' service on committees and how the new members should indicate on which committee they would like to serve. Elected Smith to represent the Staff Council on the University Union board of directors. The council also heard a report from Richard Rafes, senior vice president for administration and interim vice chancellor and general counsel for the UNT System, reviewing the UNT vision statement, how the university moved toward that goal during the 2002-03 year and how the university plans to continue moving toward that goal in the future. Council members suggested that the university consider implementing a system in addition to E-trans to help faculty and staff move quickly from one point on campus to another. Rafes asked council members to assist in the process to plan for a child-care center, which has been proposed to open on the Liberty Christian School property after the university takes possession of that property next summer. The Staff Council will meet again at 3 p.m. Nov. 5 in Marquis Hall, Room 116.
