| Enrollment reaches record high According to the headcount after the 12th day of Fall 2001 classes, UNT reports the highest unofficial fall enrollment numbers in its 111-year history: 27,909 students. Enrollment figures are not considered official until they are certified by the state later in the semester. This year
UNT enrollment is 3.2 percent ahead of the 27,054 enrolled during Fall
2000. A concentrated team effort in the area of student recruitment since
1997 (involving individuals from many university departments) has guided
UNT to a fifth consecutive year of increased enrollment. Last year enrollment
was up 2.1 percent, in Fall 1999 enrollment was up 3.8 percent and in
Fall 1998 enrollment increased by 2 percent in the fall of 1998 enrollment
increased by 2 percent, and in the fall of 1997 enrollment increased by
0.2 percent. These increases reverse modest declines in enrollment between
1991 and 1996. A look at the total undergraduate enrollment up 3 percent at 21,710 indicates UNT's sustained ability to recruit and retain students. Breaking
the undergraduate enrollment down by classification shows that freshmen
were essentially flat with just 14 fewer students than last fall. However,
sophomores increased by 476 students, or 11 percent. The numbers were
up 2.3 percent for juniors and 1 percent for seniors. Student classification
is based on the number of semester hours passed. At the graduate level,
master's degree students were up 4 percent, and doctoral students were
up 1 percent.
