UNT receives $450,000 in research funding

Three UNT researchers were recently awarded a total of $450,000 for chemical research from the Welch Foundation. Oliver Chyan, associate professor of chemistry; Paolo Grigolini, professor of physics; and Paul Marshall, professor of chemistry, each received annual grants of $50,000 to conduct chemistry research through May 2007.

The Welch Foundation, based in Houston, is one of the United States' oldest and largest private funding sources for basic chemical research.

"We appreciate the continued support of the Welch Foundation," says Ruthanne Thomas, professor and chair of the chemistry department. "These awards are fundamental to our ability to conduct research and teach students in the department."

Since its founding in 1954, the Welch Foundation has contributed to the advancement of chemistry through research grants, departmental programs, endowed chairs, visiting lectureships and other special projects at educational institutions in Texas.

Established by the estate of Robert A. Welch, an oil and minerals entrepreneur, the Welch Foundation's goal is to encourage Texas chemists in basic research that will ultimately benefit humanity.
