JAMES BAIRD, associate professor of English, presented "Jeffers and Hardy: Closet Ecologists" at a Robinson Jeffers Association meeting, April 27 in Flagstaff, Ariz.

BRUCE BOND, professor of English, read poetry and lectured on "The Ph.D. in Creative Writing" at the University of New Mexico, April 17 in Albuquerque, N.M.

A book by DORIS RHEA COY, assistant professor of counseling, development and higher education, and DENNIS ENGELS, Regents Professor of counseling, development and higher education, was recently published. The book is American Counseling Association A Fifty Year History, published by the American Counseling Association, March 2003.

GAIL LIPPINCOTT, assistant professor of English, presented "Strategies for Preparing Writers to Research and Design Accessible Documents" at the Society for Technical Communication's 50th annual international conference, May 18-22 in Dallas.

GARY GAILLIARD, associate director of the UNT Police Department, and MARTY NEWMAN, executive director of University Communications and Marketing, have been selected to the 2003-04 class of Leadership Denton, sponsored by the Denton Chamber of Commerce. It is a nine-month training program designed to generate awareness of community and public service.

ANNE SCHOOLFIELD, lecturer in English, coordinated University Interscholastic League activities for the Department of English and directed the UIL regional spelling and vocabulary contest, April 12 at UNT.

BRENDA FLEMING, 60, secretary of graduate studies in 1970, died Aug. 3 in Belton. She was born in Electra and attended Texas Woman's University and Temple College. She also worked for Humble Oil and volunteered with the Belton Independent School District. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Fleming of Belton; two sons, Steve Fleming of Bedford and David Fleming of Austin; and two sisters, Lou Story of Lefors and Wanda Skleton of Wichita Falls. A service was held Aug. 5 at First Baptist Church in Belton. Burial was in Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park.

NORA LENA FOOTE LOWREY, 81, an employee of the University Store from 1978 to 1988, died Aug. 18 in Denton. She was born in Pilot Ridge, Ky., graduated from high school at age 16 and earned a home economics degrees from Texas Woman's University. She married Thomas M. Lowrey of Denton in 1942. She had also worked at Voertman's and volunteered in the medical records department at Denton Community Hospital. She joined the Literature Department of the Woman's Shakespeare Club and was its president in 1964. She was a member of numerous other organizations and did much volunteer work. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Fulton of Denton; a son, W. Gerard Lowrey of Denton; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A service was held Aug. 21 at Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home.

LUCILLE SMITH, 87, a UNT food services worker from 1969 to 1981, died Aug. 9 in Denton. She was born Dec. 28, 1915, in Sanger. She is survived by a sister, Urena Jones of Midland; a brother, Earl Smith of Denton; and several nieces and nephews. A service was held Aug. 11 at Central Baptist Church in Denton. Burial was in Gribble Springs Cemetery in Sanger.

ANNA MARIA WRIGHT, 46, an employee in the psychology department from 1996 to 2003, died July 31. She was born in Ardmore, Okla. She graduated magna cum laude from UNT with a bachelor's degree in marketing and finance and a master's degree in accounting. She was a teaching assistant and was working toward a doctorate in psychology. She was a member of the Marketing Club and Delta Sigma Pi, serving as treasurer. She is survived by her mother, Mary Agnes Webre Wright of Denton; her sister, Charlotte Shelor of Arlington; and four brothers, Kenneth Wright III of Dallas, Michael Wright of Gainesville, Christopher Wright of Dallas and John Wright of Bloomington, Ill. A service was held Aug. 4 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Denton. Memorials may be made in her name to the UNT Department of Psychology, P.O. Box 311280, Denton, Texas 76203, so that a fund can be established in her memory.
