UNT regents approve fee increases, plans to build new residence hall

UNT System regents approved increases in student fees, Regents Professor awards and plans to build a new residence hall during a meeting Aug. 24.

Regents approved adding an advising fee of $3.25 per semester credit hour for undergraduate courses, increasing the library fee from $4 to $8.50 per semester credit hour, increasing the technology fee from $7.20 to $9.50 per semester credit hour, increasing the foreign student admissions application fee from $50 to $75, and adding a transportation fee of $3.50 per semester credit hour. All of these fees become effective with the Spring 2003 semester. Commenting on the regents' action, UNT President Norval Pohl said even with these fee increases, the cost of attending UNT is less than attending the University of Texas at Arlington or the University of Texas at Dallas.

During the meeting, regents approved the Regents Professor award for six faculty members:

  • Jeffry Kelber, chemistry
  • Floyd McDaniel, physics
  • James Morrow, kinesiology, health promotion and recreation
  • James Riggs, music
  • William Scharnberg, music
  • Marcia Staff, finance, insurance, real estate and law

Regents also approved a promotion for Alexander C. Tan to associate professor of political science with tenure and granted tenure for Eugene Osadchy, associate professor of music. In addition, regents granted tenure to three new faculty appointees; Nicholas Alikakos, professor of mathematics; T. David Mason, professor of political science; and Rodolfo Rodriguez, professor of teacher education and administration.

In other business, regents approved the design and construction of a new 300-bed residence hall at a cost not to exceed $9.5 million, pending approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Regents also approved the $295,000 purchase of property on West Prairie, where the new residence hall will be located, and approved updates to the UNT Campus Master Plan. Those updates include correcting the plan to reflect current conditions such as the addition of new buildings and parking lots and the removal of demolished structures; adding property acquisitions; extending the western and southern future expansion boundaries; rearranging future parking options to better address expected growth; and enhancing the level of detail with respect to possible street closures and the future UNT Commons.
