The UNT System Board of Regents approved a university operating budget of $344.17 million for the 2001-02 academic year at its meeting Aug. 17. The budget takes effect this month.

Church membership may bridge social distance gap between races, study says

Praying together, rather than living or learning together, may be the primary way for Caucasian Americans and Americans of other races to become comfortable with each other, according to a UNT study.George Yancey

George Yancey, assistant professor of sociology, found that Americans of European descent who are the racial minorities in their churches exhibit lower levels of social distance from African American, Hispanic and Asian groups and are more supportive of government programs aimed at those groups than Americans of European descent who don’t attend multiracial churches.

Faculty handbook available online

The 2001-02 Faculty Handbook is now available online at www.unt.edu/vpaa_fhb/homepg.html, which is the provost and vice president for academic affairs site. It contains links to the Policy Manual and several faculty forums. It can also be printed using the download icon on the provost and vice president for academic affairs home page.

Faculty Senate meets Sept. 12

The UNT Faculty Senate will resume its monthly meetings at 2 p.m. Sept. 12 in Wooten Hall, Room 322. The meetings are open to all members of the UNT community. A summory of the Sept. 12 Faculty Senate meeting will appear in the Oct. 5 InHouse.

Calendar noting holidayUNT regents approve 2001-02 holiday schedule

The Board of Regents approved the following holidays during the 2001-02 academic year:

  • Thanksgiving, Nov. 22 and 23
  • Christmas, Dec. 24 through 28
  • New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2002
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 21, 2002
  • Spring Break, March 18 through 20, 2002
  • Independence Day, July 4, 2002

    In addition, the regents approved a recommendation to close the university Dec. 31 and March 21 and 22. Staff members will be required to use vacation or compensatory leave for those closure days.
