Core Curriculum: Faculty Senate Approval and Assessment Process

Process for Approving New and Existing Courses for inclusion in the Core Core Curriculum Assessment Process
1. Course submitted to Departmental Curriculum Committee with identified Exemplary Educational Objectives

1. Each Core Course must meet the majority of the Exemplary Educational Objectives and each Core Course must have an existing assessment method approved by the appropriate Core Component Group.
2. Departmental Curriculum Committee works with the Appropriate Core Component Group to devise assessment method for the Exemplary Educational Objectives. 2. The Core Component Groups, following an established schedule, report periodically to the Curriculum Assessment Committee
3. The Course is referred by Departmental Curriculum Committee to College Curriculum Committee for approval. 3. The Curriculum Assessment Committee:
Composition: (to be added) appointed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  1. Devises the Core Assessment Process
  2. Oversees implementation
  3. Sets the cycle for Core Component Group assessment reports
  4. Revises the reporting schedule as needed
  5. Consults as needed with the Core Component Groups to ensure all Core Component Group representatives are knowledgeable in assessment issues and methods.
4. If approved by the College Curriculum Committee, the Course is referred to University Curriculum Committee for approval as a new course. 4. The Curriculum Assessment Committee forwards the Core Component Group reports to the Core Oversight Committee and to the Office of Academic Affairs.
5. If approved by the University Curriculum Committee, the course is referred to Faculty Senate for Approval as either a new course/Core course or as an existing course added to the Core. 5. The Core Oversight Committee:
Composition: 11 members: 8 tenured faculty appointed by the University Committee (one from each voting group) and 3 faculty from the Curriculum Assessment Committee (may not be from the same department or unit as the 8 faculty appointed by the University Committee.) The Chair will be appointed by the University Committee.
  1. Reviews the Core Component Group reports and monitors the success or failure of each course to meet its Exemplary Educational Objectives.
  2. Reports to the appropriate College/School Curriculum Committee any courses that are not meeting the assessment criteria for their Exemplary Educational Objectives and works with the College/School Curriculum Committee to set a re-mediation/re-assessment schedule. This information is reported to the Curriculum Assessment Committee.
  3. Presents a summary report of its oversight activities to the Faculty Senate in May of each year. The report will list those courses that are and those that are not meeting the assessment criteria for their Exemplary Educational Objectives. A copy of this report is forwarded to the Curriculum Assessment Committee.
  4. Recommends to the Faculty Senate the removal from the Core of those course that fail to meet their Exemplary Educational Objectives after the agreed upon re-mediation/re-assessment schedule is completed.
6. If approved by the Faculty Senate, the Course is referred to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. 6. The Senate, after receiving the recommendations from the Core Oversight Committee to remove a course from the Core, will place this recommendation on a subsequent Senate agenda for consideration. If the Faculty Senate approves the removal of a course from the Core, the Office of Academic Affairs is notified.
7. The Office of Academic Affairs is responsible for reporting the Assessment of the Core Curriculum to outside agencies.
