*Nonresident alien definition. In 1988, a "permanent resident" code was added to SIMS to make it possible to follow federal reporting guidelines (entry "C" below follows the guidelines).

A. In 1983-86, only U.S. citizens were counted in the ethnicity groups, and all non-U.S. citizens were counted in the "nonresident alien" group.

B. In 1987, both U.S. citizens and "non-U.S. citizens who paid in-state tuition" were counted in the ethnicity groups, with other non-U.S. citizens counted in the "nonresident alien" group.

C. In 1988-95, both U.S. citizens and "non-U.S. citizens with permanent resident status" were counted in the ethnicity groups, with other non-U.S. citizens counted in the "nonresident alien" group.

For 1985, a large increase in tuition (especially large for out-of-state students) was accompanied by a drop in enrollment for that year.
