Summary
(One-Year Retention- New from High School)
Statistical data to support the summary statements below can be found in the Appendix
A. This summary provides statistical data for the one-year retention percentages for new
from high school students beginning in Fall 1998 and tracked to Fall 1999. The summary
includes general information which discusses the ethnic and gender distribution of the new
from high school students, and it provides academic information for these students during
the same tracking period.
Admission groups based on high school class rank. Students in the top 10% of their
high school class (12.2%) plus the new TAMS students (7.4%) made up 19.6% of the 1998 new
freshman class (it is assumed that most TAMS students would probably have been in the top
10% of their high school class). Only 2.8% were from the bottom quarter and 13.9% were
from the third quarter, i.e., 16.7% were from the bottom half. (A-1)
Return rate. Slightly over two-thirds (68.2%) of the new freshmen in fall 1998
returned in fall 1999. (A-2)
Last term enrolled. Of the 867 who did not return in fall 1999, there were 525 (19.2%) who continued in the spring. (A-3)
GPA information for students who did not return after the first semester. Of the 867who did not return in fall 1999, over one-third (282 or 32.5%) were here for fall 1998 only (the other 551 continued in the spring and/or summer of 1999, but did not return in fall 1999). Of the 282 here for only one semester there were 68 who withdrew (thus have no GPA) and another 101 with a GPA of zero (most stopped going to classes without withdrawing). Of special concern, however, are the 379 with a GPA of 2.0 or better who left. (A-4)
GPA for last term enrolled. Those who returned tended to have better academic records than those who did not: 88.6% of the returnees (1,649) had a GPA of 2.0 or better compared to only 43.7% of the non-returnees (379). However, losing those 379 with a 2.0 or better GPA is of concern. (The after-grades GPA was used for those who did not return, and the 12th day fall value for those who did return.) (A-5)
Academic probation. There were 595 freshmen placed on academic probation during the one year period of Fall 1998 to Fall 1999. Four hundred and twenty nine or 72.1% did no return the falling Fall 1999. Two hundred twenty five of these students were placed on academic suspension some time during that same year. (A-6)
Academic status. This measure also indicates that, on the average, the academic performance of those who returned was superior to those who did not. Of concern, however, are the 58 students on the 3.5 and 4.0 honor roll who did not return.(A-7)
Ethnic group. The return rate for both African-Americans (68.4%) and was higher than for Whites and Hispanics (67.3%). The highest return rate was for American Indians (80.0%). (A-8)
Student classification. Of those who returned in fall 1999, over 1,010 (54%) advanced in classification. (A-9)
Age. The new freshmen were very homogeneous in age. For all new freshmen (the returning and non-returning groups combined) 78.8% were 18 years of age or younger, 17.1% were 19 or younger, and only 3.0% were 20 or older. The highest return rates were for the 16 and 17 year old students, most of whom were in the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS).(A-10)
School/College. This item reflects the school or college for the students as of the last semester enrolled. With the exception of Merchandising and Hospitality Management, the schools and colleges with the smaller freshman enrollments had the highest return rates.(A-11)
Gender. The fall 1998 new freshman class was composed of 56.4% women and 43.5% men. There was a higher return rate for women 68.9 than for men 67.4%.(A-12)
Admission group and the cumulative GPA for the last term enrolled. For the fall 1998 new freshman class, academic success as measured by the UNT cumulative GPA is associated with the admission group based on high school rank. Detailed GPA information by admission group is provided in items 13-A and 13-B. GPA values have been converted to the corresponding letter grades, i.e., A(3.5-4.0000), B(2.5-3.49999), etc. (A-13)
