Summary
(Transfer Students)
Statistical data to support the summary statements below can be found In Appendix D. A transfer student is defined as any student new to UNT who has ever been enrolled at another college or university prior to attendance at UNT. This summary includes general academic information regarding those students identified as transfer students. Also, the summary provides a list of major college and universities that was attended by these transfer students.
Classification of students when they transfer to UNT. The relative percentages are about the same for all 1999, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1996, and fall 1995. Relatively few new transfers come as freshmen or seniors, with most coming as sophomores or juniors. For fall 1999 the new transfers were 14.0% freshmen, 45.9% sophomores, 32.6% juniors, and 7.4% seniors. New transfer enrollment was up by 201students in fall 1999 from fall 1998. (D-1)
Type of institution from which transfers come. Across all student classifications, almost two-thirds (67.7%) of the new transfers were from Texas community colleges. Texas public senior universities accounted for 15.7%, followed by out-of-state institutions (13.1%) and Texas private senior institutions (3.4%). The percentages for 1999 were similar to those for 1998. (D-2)
School or college in which the transfers major. All transfers (not just new transfers in fall 1999) were included in this analysis. Of all undergraduates enrolled in fall 1999, over one-half (52.8%) originally came as transfers. For Arts and Sciences 45.2% of the undergraduate majors were transfers and for Music 32.1% were transfers. For all other schools and colleges over 50% of majors were originally transfers. (D-3)
All undergraduates by how they were admitted to UNT. Classification is as of the semester indicated and, therefore, may not be the same as when the student was originally admitted. For this item, all transfers (not just new transfers) were included in the analyses. The percentages were computed based on the total for each classification (freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior) and also for all classifications combined. (D-4)
UNT cumulative grade point average (GPA) for transfers compared to students who came to UNT as freshmen "new from high school." Only undergraduates with a UNT GPA at the beginning of fall 1999 were included. New students were not included because for them the UNT GPA element remained blank under after grade recording at the end of the semester.
Institutions from which UNT received the most undergraduate transfers in fall 1999. The report lists the institutions in order by the number of transfers. Of the 2835 new transfers in fall 1999, about (1,391 or 55%%) came from 4 institutions: Tarrant County Junior College (437), Dallas County Community College System (590), Collin County Community College (219), and North Central Texas College (145).(D-6)
Texas community colleges and Texas state universities from which undergraduates transferred to UNT in fall 1999. There were 1,666 new transfers from Texas community colleges and 427 transfers from Texas state universities. Each institution is listed, with the number of transfers from the institution. (D-7)
