UNT’s employee health insurance options do not include the
medical evacuation and repatriation portion of the requirement.
You must cover this with a separate policy if you have UNT
employee health insurance. Please see an advisor in
International Advising if you have questions.
UNT does not pay for health insurance for the first 90 days from
the beginning of the first full month on employment. You are
required to have health insurance to meet the requirement during
this period.

Health Insurance, Insurance for Medical Evacuation and
Repatriation of Remains:
Insurance is required by the government of all participants and
their families the entire time they are in J status. The
insurance must meet the minimum requirements. Failure to comply
will result in termination of the J status.
What are the requirements for insurance that I must carry?
The minimum requirements for the insurance are:
$50,000 per accident or illness.
$7,500 for repatriation of remains.
$10,000 for medical evacuation to the home country.
A “deductible” not to exceed $500.
Please see your international advisor for further details.
Where do I get this insurance?
If the University of North Texas is providing your health
insurance, you must also enroll in an insurance program that
will cover the medical evacuation and repatriation. Your
international advisor will have instructions for application.
If you will be providing your own insurance, please see your
international advisor
If you have your own coverage, you must bring proof that your
insurance will meet all minimums.
What if I do not have insurance that meets these minimums?
Your J program will be terminated. This is required by law.
Can I get an extension of my DS-2019 or get a travel endorsement
without proving insurance?
No. You are required by law to have the insurance, and we are
required by law to have proof that you do have the insurance.
