General Information

Who must pay the SEVIS fee?

1

Non-immigrants requesting F-1, J-1, or M-1 status

2

When I-20 or DS-2019 is issued on or after September 1, 2004.

Initial attendance when:

 

a.

Immigration status desired is F-1, F-3, J-1, M-1, or M-3

 

b.

Applying for a visa for entrance to the United States, or

 

c.

Applying for a change of status within the United States.

Continuing attendance when:

 

a.

Applying for a visa when the fee has not previously been paid.

 

b.

Applying for a visa after remaining outside the US for more than 5 months

 

c.

Applying for reinstatement after the allowed period of time.

 

When must the SEVIS fee be paid?

Before applying for a visa overseas at a US consular office

Before applying for a change of status within the US

Before applying for a change of exchange visitor (J-1) category

Before entry to the US at a POE by individuals who do not require an F, J, or M visa (e.g. Canadians)

 

 

To Whom must the SEVIS fee be paid?

The fee must be paid directly to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS)

 

How must the SEVIS fee be paid?

Internet: submit Form I-901 electronically and pay in US dollar funds by

 

a.

Credit card, or

 

b.

Other acceptable means of electronic payment

 By mail: submit Form I-901 to DHS by mail and pay in US dollar funds by:

 

a.

Check,

 

b.

Money order, or

 

c.

Foreign draft drawn on a US bank.

No, you will have to have someone print it off for you. Perhaps your school can get a copy for you.

 

What is the amount of the SEVIS fee?

$100.00 for all F-1, F-3, J-1, M-1, and M-3 applicants, except as noted below

What record will the applicant receive to prove that the SEVIS fee has been paid?

If paid by mail, a paper receipt will be sent to the applicant

If paid by internet, an electronic record will be created within DHS.  In addition, the applicant should print out a receipt of the internet transaction.

 

 

 

How early must Department of Homeland Security receive the SEVIS fee ?

Payment must be received at least three working days (US government schedule of working days) before applying for a visa, sending in an application for change of status, or before entering the US by individuals not required to present a visa. Otherwise, present the receipt.

 

 

 

What must the applicant do with the SEVIS fee receipt?

Keep the receipt as permanent proof  of the SEVIS fee payment.

Take the receipt to the visa interview.

3

Include a photocopy of the receipt in the change of status application.

 

 

 

When are individuals NOT subject to the SEVIS fee?

1

Extending continuing programs in the U.S

2

Changing educational levels, or fields of study in the U.S.,

3

Transferring schools or sponsors in the U.S.

Applying for OPT or AT, or

5

Applying for a visa for continuing a program – but only if a fee has previously been paid for that status, or document issued before 9/1/04.

 

 

 

Who is NEVER subject to the SEVIS fee:

1

All dependents in F-2, J-2, or M-2 status

2

J-1 participants sponsored by a  US government organization with the program sponsor designations of    G-1, G-2, or G-3.  

 

 

 

Information when applying for a visa with an Initial Attendance I-20

Department of Homeland Security has established a new SEVIS fee. If your I-20 or DS-2019 document was issued on or after September 1, 2004, and you are applying for an F or J visa, you will need to pay this fee before applying for the visa.

 

You can set up your appointment for the visa interview before paying the fee. You must have paid the fee before you go for an interview.

 

The payment, whether by internet or mail, must be recorded on the Department of Homeland Security’s system at least 3 days before the visa application, unless you have the receipt with you. We strongly recommend that you take your receipt with you, no matter which method you use to pay.

  

You can choose which method of payment you would like to use:

Mail in payment, with receipt mailed to you.

 

We are enclosing the I-901 form, specific for the University of North Texas, and instructions in case you do not have access to the items in #1. If you use the internet, you do not use this printed form.

Information when reentering the US with Initial Attendance I-20

Department of Homeland Security has established a new SEVIS fee. If your I-20 or DS-2019 document was issued on or after September 1, 2004, and you are entering the U.S. with an initial attendance I-20, or a begin program DS-2019, you will need to pay this fee before entering the U.S.

 

If you are applying for a new visa, you must pay so that it is recorded on the Department of Homeland Security’s system at least three days before your interview, or carry the receipt with you.

 

If you are reentering and do not need a new visa stamp, you must pay so that is recorded on the Department of Homeland Security’s system at least three days before your entry, or carry the receipt with you.

 

You must have paid the fee before you enter the U.S. You can not pay it at the port of entry.

 

The payment, whether by internet or mail, must be recorded on the Department of Homeland Security’s system at least 3 days before the entry, unless you have the receipt with you. We strongly recommend that you take your receipt with you, no matter which method you use to pay.
