Classes
At IELI students have small classes with an average of 12 students in each class. The
instruction is efficient, up-to-date, and interactive. Classroom activities are designed
to encourage communication and real language proficiency; thus, IELI students do well at
the university level. They do so well that UNT accepts IELI graduates with NO TOEFL. In fact, the IELI students who study in undergraduate
programs at UNT maintain higher grade point averages than U.S. students.
Levels
Students do not choose their levels. They take a placement test which places them
according to their individual skills in one of 6 levels from pre-1 (beginning) to level 6
(advanced) in the basic or core classes. The test includes
listening, reading, grammar, and composition.
The class schedule classes includes approximately 4-5
hours in class each day. Classes are held 5 days a week, Monday through Friday. IELI
offers courses all year around. There are five terms yearly. Each term is eight weeks
long. The IELI academic calendar is designed to fit in the
UNT calendar to provide an easy transition into university classes.
In addition to core classes, language lab, and academic skills class, students also
enjoy other activities throughout the year.
