Scholarships

The University of North Texas Jewish Studies Program
Is happy to announce the following scholarships:

 The Schultz Family Scholarship in Jewish Studies

   
 

To be eligible, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

   
A.  Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University in effect at the time of the award.
   
B.  Undergraduate students must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 on a 4.00 based system; must be in good academic standing, must have taken (or be in process of taking) two courses at UNT in the Jewish Studies Program, give a written commitment to minoring in Jewish Studies, must submit transcripts of their college record, must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the Jewish Studies Program at UNT; and must provide a 300- word statement describing their anticipated course of study within the Jewish Studies Program and their objectives within and beyond the academy;
   
C.  Graduate Students must have a cumulative grade-point average in graduate school of at least 3.5 on a 4.00 based system; must submit transcripts of their undergraduate and graduate records, must produce evidence that they are researching a MA thesis or Ph.D. dissertation in the area of Jewish Studies, must supply two letters or recommendation from faculty attesting to their academic qualifications and to their commitment to researching a topic in Jewish Studies for their MA thesis or Ph.D. dissertation, and must present a 300-word statement describing their anticipated course of study within the Jewish Studies Program and their objectives within and beyond the academy.
   
D. 

Each student awarded a scholarship shall:

  1. Inform in writing the Director of the Jewish Studies Program within thirty days as to whether the student will accept the scholarship.

  2. Write a letter of thanks to the Schultz family, who established the scholarship, and submit copies of the letter to the Director of Jewish Studies Program within the same thirty days.

 Watt Family Endowment Scholarship

   
 

To be eligible, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

   
A.  Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University in effect at the time of the award.
   
B.  Maintain full-time enrollment at the University, unless the student has fewer than twice the number of semester hours required to be full-time remaining in his or her program.
   
C. 

Undergraduate

  1. Undergraduate students must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25, be in good academic standing, and provide transcripts of his or her college record.

  2. Be enrolled in or have completed two courses at UNT in the Jewish Studies Program.

  3. Provide a letter of recommendation from one of the student's instructors in a Jewish Studies Program course.

  4. Give a written commitment to minor in Jewish Studies.

  5. Submit a 300-word statement describing their anticipated course of study within the Jewish Studies Program and their objectives within and beyond the academy.
   
D. 

Graduate

  1. Graduate students must submit transcripts of their graduate record.

  2. Give evidence that they are researching an M.A. thesis or Ph.D. dissertation in an area of Jewish Studies.

  3. Provide two letters of recommendation from faculty attesting to their academic qualifications and to their commitment to researching a topic in Jewish Studies for their M.A. thesis or Ph.D. dissertation.

  4. Maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average in graduate school.
   
E. 

Each student awarded a scholarship shall:

  1. Inform in writing the Director of the Jewish Studies Program within thirty-days as to whether the student will accept the scholarship.

  2. Write a letter of thanks to Howard and Maggie Watt, who established the scholarship. The student shall submit copies of the letters to the Director of the Jewish Studies Program in the same thirty-day period.

Howard H. Schultz Scholarship in Jewish Studies

   
  To be eligible, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
   
A.  Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University in effect at the time of the award.

  2. Write letters of thanks to both Howard G. Schultz, whom the scholarship honors, and to Jaynie Schultz and Ron Romaner, who established the scholarship. The student shall submit copies of the letters to the Director of the Jewish Studies Program in the same thirty-day period.

Jay and Kathy Wolens Jewish Studies Scholarship in Memory of Max and Florence Wolens

   
  To be eligible, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
   
A.  Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University in effect at the time of the award.
   
B.  Undergraduate students must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 on a 4.00 based system; must be in good academic standing, must have taken (or be in process of taking) two courses at UNT in the Jewish Studies Program, give a written commitment to minoring in Jewish Studies, must submit transcripts of their college record, must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the Jewish Studies Program at UNT; and must provide a 300- word statement describing their anticipated course of study within the Jewish Studies Program and their objectives within and beyond the academy;

Schusterman Scholarship for Study in Israel

   
  To be eligible, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
   
A.  Meet the minimum entrance and continuing academic performance standards of the University in effect at the time of the award.
   
B.  Be an undergraduate student at UNT at the time of the study in Israel.
   
C.  Have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 on a 4.00 based system; must be in good academic standing, must submit transcripts of their college record, must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the Jewish Studies Program at UNT; and must provide a 300-word statement describing their anticipated course of study in Israel, when the study will occur, how the course of study supplements their academic program at UNT, and what they hope to accomplish from their study in Israel.
   
D.  Preference will be given to students who have previously visited Israel, who have at least a basic familiarity with Hebrew, and who are minoring in Jewish Studies.
   
E. 

Each student awarded a scholarship shall:

  1. Inform in writing the Director of the Jewish Studies Program within thirty-days as to whether the student will accept the scholarship.

  2. Write a letter of thanks to The Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, which established the scholarship, and submit copies of the letter to the Director of Jewish Studies Program within the same thirty days.

  3. Within thirty days after the student’s return from Israel, submit in writing to the Director of the Jewish Studies Program a narrative account of the experience in Israel and the benefits derived as a result of the student’s study in Israel.

Students are responsible for retrieving letters of recommendation from their professors. Those letters should be conveyed to Dr. Richard M. Golden in sealed envelopes, with the professor's signature on the seal.

Completed applications, including all letters of recommendation and all college transcripts, must be received by Dr. Richard M. Golden, Director, Jewish Studies Program, at Room 239, Wooten Hall, or at his campus mailing address: Jewish Studies Program, University of North Texas, P.O. Box 310650, Denton, TX 76203-0650 no later than March 7, 2007, for scholarships to be awarded for the 2007-2008 academic year.
