Supplemental Instruction and Supplemental Tutoring

Supplemental Instruction (SI) and Tutoring (ST) is a non-remedial academic assistance program that increases student performance and retention. The SI/ST program targets traditionally difficult courses (ST works with all sections of MATH 1010 while SI works with all other courses) and provides regularly scheduled, out of class, peer facilitated study sessions. These sessions are organized by SI/ST leaders who have passed the course and been recommended by their instructors to work for the SI/ST program. The leaders are assigned a class section and attend all class sessions, take notes, read all assigned material, and conduct three or more 50 minute SI/ST sessions per week. They also have an open dialogue with the instructors to better understand what is expected of the students.

The SI/ST sessions integrate how-to-learn with what-to-learn. Students are expected to actively participate in the sessions and help each other learn in a group study atmosphere. The sessions normally occur in or near the course classroom and are free to all students. Since SI/ST is non-mandatory and students or wide ranging academic backgrounds attend, it is not a remedial program. Some students come to ensure that they pass, while others come to solidify an "A". That mix of people allows students to form friendships and study groups that they can keep throughout their collegiate career. SI/ST serves as a way for students to not only improve their grades, but to form bonds with other students and the university.

SI/ST students earn higher course grades and withdraw less often than non-SI/ST participants. Also, national data demonstrates a higher re-enrollment and better graduation rates among SI/ST participants. SI is now in over 500 institutions in the U.S. and abroad. It was first developed at the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1973.
