Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Student Legal Services help me fight a traffic ticket?

While the Student Legal Services cannot represent students in criminal matters (including traffic tickets), students are invited to come during our walk-in times to get general legal advice or a referral to State Bar network of attorneys.

Will I be charged for any part of the legal services I receive?

No, there is no charge from this office. If there are litigation costs associated with your case you will be asked to pay them.

Can your office prepare Wills for both my spouse and I?

No, only one party can be represented in will preparation at our office. SLS will not prepare wills for spouses. A recent district court decision ruled against an attorney who prepared wills for both, but failed to notify the husband that his wife changed her mind at a later date. Due to problems that may arise from representing two people whose property and lives are intertwined, we will not risk any potential for conflicts of interest.

What if I have an urgent legal problem. Do I have to wait for the walk-in times?

No. Please let the staff person who answers the telephone know the nature of your problem and the reason it is urgent. Students are often seen quickly if there are legal deadlines to meet.

What kinds of cases does the Student Legal Services take?

This office can handle many different types of civil cases, especially landlord/tenant matters and consumer complaints. Please see "Services Provided."

What kinds of cases are not accepted by the Student Legal Services?

The Student Legal Services cannot represent students in criminal matters, with legal complaints against the University or in cases of students versus students. (Free mediation services can be arranged through this office to handle certain disputes when the Advisor cannot represent a student.) Other types of cases this office does not handle are contested divorces and bankruptcy cases.

What if I don't need advice, but just general information on a topic?

Outside Room 322AA, University Union, is a collection of pamphlets covering many legal topics. There are also forms and pamphlets inside the office which are free to students.

I want to sue someone in small claims court. Do I need an attorney?

No, small claims court is set up to accommodate non-lawyers. If your dispute involves less than $10,000.00, you can probably sue in the local Justice of the Peace court. Our office has additional information, forms and pamphlets on how to sue in small claims court.
