Undergraduate Majors and Interests
You will be in good company if you expect to commute to the University of North Texas from Dallas, Fort Worth or another nearby city while you are a student. Of the more than 27,000 undergraduate students attending UNT, 81 percent live off campus or commute to UNT.
To park on campus, you will need a General Commuter or Premium Commuter parking permit. The General Commuter Parking Permit will allow you to park in lots designated "G". For a higher price, a Premium Commuter Parking Permit will allow you to park in lots designated "P" as well as "G". Both parking permits are good for the entire academic year and can be purchased for full price at the beginning of the fall semester. The price is prorated if the permits are purchased later on in the year. Permits are available at the UNT Bookstore in the University Union the week before classes start and during the first week of classes, and later at the Sullivant Public Safety Center.
The largest commuter lot is at Fouts Field, where you may park and then ride the UNT Shuttle to various campus locations. UNT faculty, staff and students can use the shuttle at no cost with proof of UNT ID. Most services operate from 7:15 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday. The shuttle's Night Rider route runs from 5:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. There are also special routes serving Discovery Park, formerly known as Research Park. UNT's e-ride system provides on-demand rides from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. all week in a lift-equipped ADA bus. UNT is the first university to provide this service.
Another parking option is the privately owned parking garage on the east side of campus. Semester parking passes are only sold at the parking garage booth, which is on the northwest side of the facility. There are also hourly parking rates.
UNT encourages the use of alternative modes of transportation when traveling to and from the campus including carpooling and mass transit. Commuter, Off-Campus and Non-Traditional Student Services maintains an online carpool sign-up system. If you are interested in carpooling, you may access the system at http://alternetrides.com/Home_Rides.asp. The Denton County Transportation Authority features the Commuter Express, which provides transportation to and from downtown Dallas, Carrollton and Lewisville. The Express is free to UNT students.
University police officers can assist you if you have safety or vehicle concerns while parking on campus. Campus policies prohibit officers from changing tires or unlocking or repairing vehicles. However, officers will attempt to jump-start vehicles and will help you contact locksmiths or repair services. You may call for assistance by dialing the police dispatcher at 940-565-3000, or, if you have a safety concern, by lifting the receiver of a campus emergency phone, which automatically connects you with the dispatcher. Emergency phones are found throughout campus.
Although the campus is well lighted at night, UNT wants you to feel safe. You can dial the police dispatcher or use an emergency phone to request a security escort.
If you attend evening classes, several offices have extended hours during the long semesters, including Student Financial Aid and Scholarships, Dean of Students, Student Activities and the Registrar's Office. The Dean of Students Office also operates an after-hours message line for your convenience at 940-565-2648. Your recorded message or question will be sent to the appropriate office the next day, and a staff member will contact you.
You may make toll-free long-distance phone calls to any location in the Dallas-Fort Worth region by using one of the metro telephones located outside the University Program Council Office on the second floor of the University Union. These phones are available during the fall and spring semesters between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
You also may make toll-free long-distance phone calls from any location in the Dallas-Fort Worth region to UNT by dialing the university's metro line at 817-267-3731. While on campus, you may make free on-campus and local phone calls using the white courtesy phones located on the first and third floors of the University Union.
The DCTA operates the Access transportation service for people with ADA-certified disabilities. Access is a curb-to-curb service. It operates from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. To find out if you may use the service or to ask questions, call 940-243-0077.
