Early Admission

What is early admission?

The University of North Texas offers an early admission program for academically talented students who want to take college courses after completing their junior year of high school. Through this program, you will work with your guidance counselor to enroll in one or two UNT freshman-level classes each semester during your senior year. You will receive high school and college credit for each class, allowing you to satisfy your high school graduation requirements and to get an early start on your college education.

You normally will remain enrolled in your high school and live at home, commuting to UNT for classes. You will receive all the privileges of an undergraduate student, including a student identification card that will provide you with free admission to most athletic events, music performances and other campus events. You also may use the services of the UNT libraries and the student recreation center.

Applying for early admission

To apply for early admission, you must submit an ApplyTexas Application for freshman admission with a non-refundable $40 application fee to the UNT admissions office.

You should have your application on file with the admissions office by June 1 for admission the following fall semester or by Dec. 1 for the spring semester. If you want to enroll in a UNT summer school session after completing your junior year of high school, you should have your application on file by May 1 for classes beginning in May or June; by July 1 for classes beginning in July.

What to submit

In addition to the application, you should include:

  • Your official high school transcript showing all the academic work you have completed or will complete by the end of your junior year. The transcript should indicate you have completed or will complete 3 credits of English, 2 credits of math (selected from Algebra I and II, Geometry, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Elementary Analysis and Analytic Geometry), 2 credits of science (selected from Physical Science, Biology I and II, Chemistry I and II, and Physics I and II) and 2 credits of social science (selected from U.S. History, U.S. Government, World History, World Geography and Economics).
  • An official SAT Reasoning Test score of 1180 (critical reading plus math scores. The writing portion is strongly recommended but not required) or higher or an ACT test score of 26 or higher. These scores are slightly higher than those of the average entering freshman at UNT.
  • Your approximate class rank by the end of your junior year. You must be in the top quarter of your high school class and have a strong B average or higher.
  • A letter from your high school counselor or principal indicating that he or she is aware of your intention to enroll at UNT and recommends enrollment.
  • A letter from your parent or guardian indicating that he or she is aware of your intention to enroll at UNT and approves.

After your application and all above items are on file with the admissions office, you should call to arrange an interview with an admissions officer. The undergraduate admissions office is on the third floor of the Eagle Student Services Center. Applicants are reviewed on an individual basis for possible admittance into the Early Admission program.
